Hi, folks. I'm excited to discuss the neuroscience of empathy with you, and to explore the ways in which neurobiological understanding of empathy may inform its deployment in social institutions; along with discussion about the root value of deliberately increasing our net "Empathy Quotient" as a society--what is gained; what is lost? Here are some readings I'd recommend to form a platform for tomorrow night's conversation. I'm listing them in order of what I think are the most important for creating a common set of concepts for meaningful discussion: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/ 11/06/opinion/brooks-the- heart-grows-smarter.html http://loverev.wordpress.com/ 2011/10/19/the-scanner-on-the- mount-a-neural-challenge-to- love-thy-enemy/ http://www.rootsofempathy.org/ http://www.wired.com/ wiredscience/2011/10/is-the- world-just/ http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=l7AWnfFRc7g
A discussion group for people who like to think twice before jumping to conclusions. Each month we dive deep into a subject with a presenter and a preassigned set of reading/audio/visual materials. Open and honest inquiry on all topics is encouraged and welcomed. The only investment is your time. We most often meet the third Thursday of each month from 7:30 - 9:30 pm at Mark & Elizabeth England's home at 1194 South 500 East in Salt Lake City.
