Since we have 12 topics, we will assign them all and not have a floating month this year.

Please comment below if you are interested in hosting a topic. If you are not interested in hosting, but you are aware of some resources you could send to the topic host, please indicate that as well.

Most of the topic hosts will end up being the person who suggested the topic, but if you are interested, even if you did not suggest the topic, feel free to volunteer. If more than one person is interested in hosting a topic, we'll work together to figure it out.

The topic host's job is to thoughtfully select approximately one-hour's worth of prep materials the month prior to their topic, and to make those materials available on the blog. The topic host also comes prepared with a discussion guide (including specific questions, references to the prep materials, additional insights, etc.) to keep the discussion focused and moving. The topic host may prepare a short "presentation" on the topic (10 minutes or less) if she or he wishes (or invite an "expert" to do the 10-minute presentation), but remember the point of us getting together is for the members of the group to talk to and learn from each other.

  1. I would love to host or be involved with the food topic unless someone else has already claimed it. I'm hoping we can have some fierce arguments about raw milk.

  2. I should also say that if I get to helm the food discussion, I think the topic needs greater specificity. I would like to explore the ramifications of local food culture:
Why don't we really have one in America?
Can one be built if doesn't exist intrinsically (ie: awareness campaigns, the mainstreaming of the localvore via Pollan, Kingsolver, etc).
Is our current food-system and the power structures involved too entrenched to allow it?
Is it financially feasible in America (i.e. will it ever be more than just the province of the neo-hippie/upper middle class, over-educated food snob?)
How is our larger culture affected by it's absence?
Wendell Berry would probably factor largely in readings (because I love him), but I am interested in exploring critiques from the other side. I am open to suggestions.
